THE ISSUE:
The skin is the largest organ of the human body and is affected by environmental stressors such as pollution, dirt and sunlight every day. When our faces are exposed to those conditions over time, the delicate tissue can become damaged. The skin can also reflect how we are feeling on the inside, whether we are tired, stressed, eating healthy foods or consuming enough fluids. One way to improve the look of skin is to provide specific nutrients that help support its structural matrix as well as retain moisture. The skin has several different layers, but the underlying collagen network gives skin its firm, smooth look. Understanding the skin:
The skin is made up of three layers: the epidermis, the dermis and the fat layer.
The epidermis: The top layer of the skin is made up of mostly dead cells that are constantly being shed as new skin cells push their way to the surface. This cell-renewal process slows down as people age, which is one reason why older skin doesn’t look as “fresh” as younger skin.
During the 1990s, much of skincare technology was focused on removing the outer skin layer through exfoliation using mild acids. The goal was to speed up the cell-renewal process and bring fresher, more vibrant cells to the surface. However, newer research suggests that the resulting skin irritation from the acids actually increases signs of aging with continued use.
The dermis: The dermis lies beneath the epidermis and is where sweat and oil-producing glands, nerves, hair follicles and blood vessels are located.
